It is extracted, removed impurity, vacuum dried, or spray dried to be made into powder by adopting modern scientific technology. Every g powder is equal to crude drug 2.6g.
Description
Slight-brown fine powder, delicate fragrance, mild and slight bitter in taste.

Flos Lonicerae mainly contains chlorogenic acid, isochlorogenic acid, flavonoid, triterpenes, volatile oil and inorganic element.
Pharmacological action
1. Function of anti-pathogenic-micro-organism
(1). Anti-bacterium function: experiment research shows that Flos Lonicerae has inhibiting effect on many kinds of pathogen.(2). Anti-virus function: as to human embryo kidney primary simple epithelium cell tissue culture, Flos Lonicerae decoction (1:20) has inhibiting effect on influenza virus, and herpes virus.

Origin and Preparations
It is the dried fruit ofGardenia jasminoides Ellis.(Fam. Rubiaceae). It is prepared by the modern techniques of extracting, purifying and spray-drying. 1 gram of the extract powder is equivalent to 3.5 grams of the crude herb.
Property, taste and attributive meridian
Bitter in taste, cold in property. Enters the heart, lung and triple-jiao meridians.
Function and indication
Purge fire to relieve vexation, clear away heat and promote diuresis, cool the blood and clear away toxicity. Indicated for febrile diseases with irritability,jaundice, yellow urine, painful and difficult in urination due to bloody stranguria, hematemesis and epistaxis due to blood-heat,redness, pain and swelling of the eyes, sores and carbuncles due to noxious fire, and contusions (external use).

Pseudolarix kaempferi Gord.
Golden Larch Bark is the dried root bark or stem bark near the root of Pseudolarix kaempferi Gord. (Fam. Pinaceae).
Action: To kill parasites and relieve itching.
Indications: Scabies and tinea.
Usage: Appropriate quantity soaked with vinegar or wine, or ground into powder and mixed with water to be applied topically.
- Huangbo (Coretex phellodendri)
Source
Bark of Phellodendron chinense Schneid. or P.amurese Rupr., family Rutaceae.
Characteristics
Bark yellow, lamellar, unequal in length and width, 2-6 mm thick. Outer surface yellow-brown, flat or longitudinally grooved when cork peeled off. Inner surface densely longitudinally striated. Cross section surface fibrous and lamellar. Prepared as crosscut fine strips. Bitter in atse, cold in nature, and attributive to kidney, urinary bladder and large intestine channels.
Indication
1. Clear away heat and deprive dampness from middle-jiao: for diarrhea, dysentery, jaundice, leocorrhagia, stranguria, edema of lower limbs, prurigo, etc. of dampness-heat type.
2. Purge the sthenic fire and clear away toxic materials: for skin infection, furunclosuis complicated by septicemia, burn, and seasonal febrile disease.
3. Purge the kidney-fire and reduce asthenia-heat: for syndrome of fire-hyperactivity and yin-deficiency manifested as hectic fever, night sweat, emission and red-dry tongue.
Pharmacological action
Berberine is the mian active component with an action similar to Rhizoma Coptidis.

Origin and preparation
This drug is the dry root of Astragalus membranaceus Bge. Var. monaholicus (Bge) Hsiaoor Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bge (family Leguminosae) and produced into powder through modern scientific technology. Extractum of every gram is equivalent to 4.5g of raw herb.

Function and indication
Clear away heat and deprive dampness, expel wind and kill parasites. Indicated for diarrhea and dysentery of dampness-heat, hematochezia due to intestinal wind, jaundice, difficulty in micturition, edema, leukorrhagia, pruritus vulvae, scabies and tinea, leprosy, itch of skin, carbuncles and sores of damp toxicity.

Chemical components: It contains alkaloids, such as matrine, oxymatrine,and N-oxysophocarpine.
Clinical application:
It is used to treat bacillary dysentery, trichomonal pyelonephritis, eczema and dermatitis, cervicitis, diseases of lung and heart, functional disorder of temporomandibular joint, sleepless, arrhythmia, leukopenia, and senile acute non-lymphocytic leukemia.

Origin
Difuzi is matured fruit of Kochia scoparia, family Chenopodiaceae.

Bitter in taste, cold in nature, and attributive to kidney, bladder channel.
Function and indications
Clear away heat and promote diuresis, dispel wind ad arrest itching. Indicated for dribbling urine, stranguria with turbid urine, gynecological disease, dysentery with bloody stool, rubella, eczema, sarcoptidosis, cutaneous pruritus, sore.
Chemical components: triterpenes and triterpenoid saponin, oleanolic acid.
Pharmacological actions
1. bacteriostasis.
Difuzi water infusion (1:3) has different inhibition on the skin fungi such as achorion schoenleinii, audouin’s microsporon, microsporon ferrugineum and microsporon fleece.
2. Action on immune function.
Difuzi water extraction 500mg/kg can distinctly decrease granular carbon clearing rate and absorption of granular carbon by liver and spleen for the mice. Its extract 100mg/kg and 500mg/kg can obviously inhibit phagocytosis of abdominal macrophage on chicken RBC (CRBC) and has some inhibition on delayed hypersensitivity induced by PC and sheep RBC, but has no obvious effect on inflammation caused by xylene.
- Yin chen (Herb Artemisiae Scopariae )
Origin
Yinchen is the young plant or upper part of Artemisia scoparia Waldst. et Kit., family Compositae.
Identification
1g Yinchen powder is put into 20ml ethanol, regurgitated on the water bath for 30 minutes and filtered. The filtrate shows light yellow-green color, detected in the ultraviolet light (365nm), it will show purplish red fluorescence.
Property, taste, attributive meridian
Slightly bitter and slightly acrid in taste, slightly cold in nature, and attributive to liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach, bladder channel.
Function and indications
Clear away heat and promote diuresis, normalize functioning of the gallbladder and cure jaundice. Indicated for oliguria due to jaundice, ulcer and pruritus.
Chemical components: volatile oil, butyladehyde, furfuraldehyde, cineole.
Pharmacological actions
1. Cholagogic effect.
2. Protecting liver.
3. Action on cardiovascular system.
Yinchen infusum and volatile oil can lower the blood pressure.
4. Clearing away fever, sedation, and anti-inflammation.
5. Anti-pathogenic microbes.
The experiments in vitro indicated that Yinchen decoctum has different inhibition on staphylococcus aureus, diphtheria bacillus, anthrax bacillus, typhoid, bacillus pyocyaneus, escherichia coli, dysentery bacillus, hay bacillus and meningitis diplococcus.

- Herba Menthae (Bo He)
Description
Stems square, with opposite branches, 15-40cm long, 2-4mm in diameter; externally purplish-brown or pale green, the angular regions pubescent, internodes 2-5cm long; texture fragile, fracture white, pith hollowed. Leaves opposite, short petioled, lamina crumpled and rolled, when whole, broadly lanceolate, long-elliptical or ovate, 2-8cm long, 103cm wide; the upper surface dark green and the lower surface greyish-green, sparsely pubescent, bearing concave dotted glandular scales. Verticillaster axillary, calyx campanulate, with five terminal teeth, corolla pale purple. Odour, characteristic and aromatic after rubbing; taste, pungent and cool.
Function
To dispel wind-heat from the head and eyes, and to promote eruption.
Indication
Headache in influenza, upper respiratory infection and other epidemic febrile diseases at the initial stage; inflammation of the eye, sore throat, ulcers in the mouth; rubella measles; discomfort with feeling of distension in the chest and hypochondriac regions.
Pharmacological Action
- Dispersing evil wind-heat from superficies:
For either exterior syndrome due to wind-heat which is marked by fever with slight chill, headache and anhidrosis, or exterior syndtome of seasonal febrile disease at its beginning stage, Hera Menthae is often combined with Flos Lonicerae, Fructus Forsythiae, etc.; for high fever, with Gypsum; for syndrome of summer-heat in summer which is marked by dizziness, fever, thirsty, scanty and dark urine, with Talcum, Radix Glycyrrhizae, thirst, scanty and dark urine, with Talcum, Radix Glycyrrhizae.
- Clearing away the evil factors in the head,brightening the eyes and soothing the throat:
For treating cold due to wind-heat or such symptoms as headache with red eyes, sore throat, etc., due to invasion of the head by wind-fire, it is combined with Herba Schizonepetae, Flos Chrysanthemi, Radix Ledebouriellae, Fructus Arctii, Radix Platycodi, Radix Glycyrrhizae, etc.
- Promoting eruption and arresting itching:
It is often combined with Fructus Forsythiae, Periostracum Cicadae, Fructus Arctii, Herba Schizone-petae, Radix Ledebouriellae, etc. for the treatment of measles with failure of letting out skin eruptions due to invasion of the superficies and muscles by wind-heat, and urticaria, pruritus, etc.
Besides, it is also indicated in depression of liver-Qi, distention and pain of the chest and hypochondriac region; for this purpose, a proper amount may be added to the other ingredients of the prescription for soothing the liver.

Origin and Preparation
Aiye is dried leave of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant., family Compositae.It is prepared by extracting, purifying and spray-drying with the modern techniques. 1 gram of extract powder is equivalent to 6.1 grams of crude herb.
Description
Brown powder with sweet smell and pungent and bitter taste.
Property, Taste and Attributive Meridian
Pungent and bitter in taste, warm in nature; slight toxicity. Enter the liver, spleen and kidney meridian.
Function and Indication
Dispel cold and relieve pain, warm meridian and stop bleeding. Indicated for coldness and pain in the lower abdomen, coldness and disorder in menses , cold womb and barren, hematemesis, bleeding from the eye, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, bleeding after
pregnancy; external use for pruritus.

Origin
Duhuo is root of Angelica pubescens Maxim. f. biserrata Shan. et Yuan, family Umbelliferae.
Identification
3g Duhuo powder is put into 30ml diethyl ether, heated and regurgitated for 1 hour and filtered. The filtrate evaporates till dry, the residue is dissolved with 3ml petroleum ether (30-60oC) and filtered again. Adding 3ml ethanol into the residues and detected in the intraviolet light (365nm), it will show blue purplish fluorescence. (checking tonka bean camphor)
Property, taste, attributive meridian
Bitter and acrid in taste, slightly warm in nature, and attributive to kidney, bladder channel.
Function and indications
Expel the wind and remove dampness, disperse cold and relieve pain. Indicated for arthralgia due to wind-cold-dampness, pain in waist and knee, headache and toothache.

Chemical components: coumarin compound, dihydrooroselol and acetic ester.
Pharmacological action
1. Action on cardiovascular system.
Duhuo agent can lower blood pressure for the anesthetized dogs and cats by vein injection, but it is not long.
2. Action on blood platelet aggregation.
Duhuo extract has inhibition on platelet aggregation for the rats induced by ADP in vitro.
3. Sedation, relieving pain and anti-inflammation.
4. Photosensitization.

Cang zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis )
Origin
Cangzhu is the rhizome of Atractylodes lancea ( Thunb.) DC. or A. chinensis ( DC.) Koidz., family Compositae.
Identification
3g Cangzhu powder is put into 5ml diethyl ether, shaken and soaked for 15 minutes and filtered. Take 2ml filtrate into evaporating utensil, add 1ml sulphuric acid solution (10%) which contains 5% paradimethylaminobenzaldehyde after diethyl ether evaporates, it will show rose red and then turns green after dried under 100oC for 5 minutes.

Function and indications
Eliminate dampness and invigorate the spleen, expel the wind and dampness, improve acuity of vision. Indicated for dampness blocks the spleen and stomach, lassitude and drowsiness, feeling of stuffiness in chest and abdominal distention, poor appetite, vomiting and diarrhea, phlegm-retention, edema due to dampness; exterior syndrome with dampness, heave sensation and pain over the head and body; Bi-syndrome due to excessive dampness, heave and sour of extremities; night blindness.

1. Action on digestive system.
(1) Resisting experimental gastritis and gastric ulcer. (2) Action on gastrointestinal movement: Cangzhu acetone extract 75mg/kg can promote gastrointestinal movement. (3) Effect on the liver: Cangzhu water decoction 10g (crude herb)/kg can obviously promote synthesis of liver albumen for the mice by oral administration for continuous 7 days.
2. Action on the blood sugar.
Cangzhu decoction and infusion by oral administration or subcutaneous injection 8g/kg can increase blood sugar for the rabbits, the blood sugar reaches the peak within 1 hour and gradually decreases for 6 hours.
